Dec 04, 2016 Aluminium cools faster than copper due to how much more winds and layers you can do vs copper and still have a much lower weight. However most aluminium coil subs have higher FS which tend to be peaky and better for one note burps if used with regular stiff spider.

For example our new sonance v.2 has a 50mm tall coil. the copper one weighed almost 300 grams. the high temp alum weighed 128.5 grams. the spl diffrence would have been a good amount @1w and there would have been a much higher chance for defect.

"I have many of the Dayton Subwoofers and love them all but his new line of woofers has some great high end features yet they skimped and went with Aluminum wire on the voice coils. How much would copper have costed, another 25 cents in China.
The voice coil isn't aluminum, it's copper. The aluminum coil has a dcr of 8.3W and the copper coil is 11.0W. This wasn't considered to be of much importance other than the difference in voltage applied to deliver the same power. The nominal impedance of the aluminum coil is 8.6W at 300hz to 500hz and the copper coil is 11.8W within the same band.
The voice coil is high-purity aluminum, which is superior to copper for heat dissipation, as well as significantly reduced moving mass. The result is an extremely lightweight winding with good power handling and low inductance.
