I have engraved clear acrylic and glass using a stainless steel underlay and it works great with a fiber. A CO2 will do anodized aluminum with at least 10 watts. The eBay larger CO2 machines 50-100 watt look very capable and should be worth the investment. CO2 laser will lose power over time so buy a lot of extra wattage to compensate.
