
Sep 01, 2007 WOW!! I just took a look! Thanks for all the replies!! All very helpfull! I should have been more specific. When I repair older alluminum castings, some times I have to grind out the weld and do it again, do to all the old oil and crap in the original casting, for me the grinding out never goes well, the stones load or just don't cut well, then I have to clean it all up again and weld again.

I kiss the top with a 24 or 36 G 3M ( orange ) disk - aways use grinding lube. Then I switch to Norton Flap disc's - still usin lube. These butt welds fail in the HAZ—not in the weld metal—and the strength doesn't change, regardless of the filler metal. This isn't the same with lap or fillet welds.

My machine is set to 25.9 V and 378 wirespeed, i think im using 316L .035" wire. I looked on the miller website for machine settings and it tells me to use 1/16 wire for 1/2" aluminium but we dont have anything but 0.035 wire and maybe some 0.045. That is a 1" square bar and 1/2" aluminum plate. Any advice would be grestly appreciated! TIA

The weld mask comes with an empty cheater frame, so you can fill your own prescription. I took it to Costco and they said they could not provide lenses for it.

May 06, 2007 Ok, I have a shop where we weld a corner to corner 1/4" 5052 aluminum plate. After welding, the part is dressed and the weld is ground off, sanded and then powdercoated. Occasionaly we will get pin holes during the sanding process (around 1 out of 12 parts) and will spend hours of man time trying to fill these little pin holes.

May 02, 2019 I had one for close to 20 years and recently stepped up to a Miller 211. The sidekick is perfect for bodywork, sheet metal and mild fab work. The problem is that when trying to run an autogenous stringer bead weld on 1/8" thick 1020 steel, the arc will not stay centered on the end of the electrode. It strays to one side or the other of the electrode.
